“IMAGINE Transition” Contest and Festival
Transition Nelson is organizing the “Imagine Transition” festival to give everyone a chance to communicate their vision of Nelson’s future.
Imagine our future and express it in art (includes photography), creative writing, video, music or opinion.
The post-carbon, resilient, sustainable Nelson of 2030 will be very different than today. How different will it be? What will the “transition” be like? How will it be even better than today?
In the spirit of fun, community bonding, inspiration, and awareness raising, Transition Nelson has conceived of a variety of open, friendly competitions called “Imagine Transition”. It aims to engage the Nelson and area community in creating their own expressions of art through various mediums. Transition Nelson hopes to raise awareness about climate change, peak oil, and the impacts these can have on our future community by hosting these arts competitions. People who wish to enter these contests will attempt to depict Nelson in a future, post-carbon world, or might visualize the process of “transition” that Nelson needs to go through in order to get there.
There are five main events as follows. Events include prizes and all offer high community visibility. Exact details of each competition and entry forms are available on this website. These competitions are open to all ages. Should you wish to use the Transition Nelson logo in your artwork (no obligation), it is available for download here as well. By searching through the Transition Nelson website and learning more about the global “transition town” movement, participants can actively engage in the subject matter for creative inspiration.

Good luck to all – and happy imagining the creation of the Nelson you want to live in!

I was born and raised in Nelson in a neighborhood oasis, Cotton Wood Creek/Falls Kootenay and Observatory Street. A neighborhood of extended families that built a foundation of relationships. In 1974 the neighborhood was destroyed ripping up the foundation of lives to put in a highway direct route into Nelson. It was a horrible time when families had to give up their homes to the Department of Highways. I use to ride my horse from Mountain Station to the Beach via the Falls/Gully pathway. It was quiet and prestine. Not anymore.
I’m concerned about the quality of life with so many people wanting to live in Nelson. The peaceful quiet enjoyable living changes to chaos. Not so many people use the transit system, congestion and horrid air quality. The fresh water and so many people in the wilderness areas, pollution due to the conscious approach that the earth is like living in an apartment; not so permanent and such wasteful attitudes. The issue of cellular phones and the tower only 4 kilometers away…I’m not so sure this is good and question the governments acceptable scale of radio waves.
I would like to see Nelson return to a nature lovers’ paradise where no one wears a watch and goes slow to the tune of a smooth ride. Can the pendulum tick instead of swinging so radically to extremes.

I’m the author of “Taking the Kootenay Tour Going for a Loop”. A historical adventure I will enter come this spring when it is released to the public.
I’ve been thinking about housing density issues, and how many big, old houses there are in Nelson with only a few people living in them. Sometimes it’s people whose children are grown, who don’t want to give up their family home.
What about exchanging needed skills for live-in housing, for example cooking or gardening? This could save everyone money, and be a better use of space.
This could be ideal for owners of larger homes who have extremely demanding work and don’t have time for these tasks, or someone who travels a lot and wants a presence in their home while they’re away, or for someone who’s writing a book. In the case of cooking, it could also be perfect for someone who needs to change their diet but doesn’t know where to begin if they were to have a vegan cook move in with them.
Each arrangement would need to be made very carefully, based on lifestyle preferences (both parties would need to have similar tolerances for levels of noisiness, tidiness and cleanliness, and pets could be an issue), but could be mutually beneficial.
Thanks for the opportunity to share this idea.
