Learn the Basics

One of the compelling foundations of the Transition Movement is the way it encourages collective wisdom –  the awareness that good ideas are found in many directions, rarely just one. Following are a list of resources that have great information, ideas and insights shared by fellow “transitioners”, helping to pursue connectivity and understanding.

To learn more about your impact on the earth and to start understanding how your lifestyle effects climate change we recommend that everyone participates in the following:

Eco-Footprint Calculator and Sustainability Survey

  • Find out your eco-footprint and participate in UBC’s sustainability survey. The eco-footprint calculator is simple and easy, and in the end lets you know how many ‘planet earths’ would need to exist if everyone on the planet lived as you do. – http://www.sustain.ubc.ca/eco-survey/

Carbon Footprint Calculator

  • The carbon footprint calculator is simple and fun. You will need your Nelson Hydro bill and your Terasen Gas bill and a calculator. (Hint: for the Electricity Consumption question, the Nelson Hydro bill lists your “AVG KWH Per Day. Multiply this value by 365 for your “Annual Household Usage. For the Home Heating and Cooling question; your average daily usage for natural-gas can be found on your Terasen Bill. Multiply this by 101105.0 for your “Annual natural-gas usage” and change units to kWh)  – http://spectrum.ieee.org/static/carbon-calculator-2009
